June gardening: what to plant and when?

Overview of the most important planting and care tasks

June is one of the most intensive times for gardening. With the spring frosts gone, all the plants in the garden enter an intensive growth phase, so now is the time to really expand the vegetable garden, plant annual flowers and care for existing plants. In this article, we'll show you what to plant in June, the most important gardening tasks and how to look after your garden so it's healthy, productive and beautiful all summer long.

The importance of June in the garden

Long days, warm soil and high temperatures create ideal conditions for the growth of vegetables, herbs and flowers. In June, regular watering, nutrient replenishment, weed control and pest management are essential to keep plants healthy and produce a bountiful harvest.

What to plant in June?

Vegetables

  • Tomatoes: Can still be planted from seed in June, especially the smaller fruited, fast maturing varieties. These can be harvested at the end of summer.

  • Peppers: Also recommended to plant from seed, it grows quickly in a sunny, warm place.

  • Cucumber, pumpkin, courgette: Can also be sown in June if they receive sufficient water and sunlight. Allow 60-70 days for pumpkins to mature.

  • Green leaves: Lettuce, arugula and parsley should be sown continuously, as they thrive better in the summer heat in a shadier place.

  • Month-old radish: It can be harvested quickly, in as little as 4-5 weeks, but don't leave it in the ground too long as it can become bitter.

  • Beetroot: Cold tolerant, but can be sown in June if a shadier spot is chosen.

  • Beans, sweetcorn: Sown in June, they continue to produce fresh crops in the second half of summer.

Herbs

Basil, rosemary, dill, parsley and other herbs can be planted from seed or seedlings to add fresh flavour to dishes all summer long.

Flowers and ornamental plants

Annual flowers such as petunias, geraniums and begonias can be planted even in June. Container-grown ornamental plants are also ideal for planting this month, as nurseries can buy healthy, mature specimens.

Garden maintenance tasks in June

Irrigation

Because of the warm and long days, the plants need more water. It is best to water early in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation losses. Water several times in small doses to keep the soil from drying out, but also to keep it from getting too wet.

Weed control and soil care

Weeds grow quickly with regular watering and summer rains. Rake the soil, loosen the topsoil and mulch to reduce weeding and maintain soil moisture.

Pruning and thinning

Summer pruning of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs can be done in June to boost yields and make the plants healthier. Thin out dense stands to allow air to circulate through the plants and reduce the risk of disease.

Pest and disease control

The first pests (aphids, thrips, mites) appear. Use biological control (e.g. introduction of ladybirds) or environmentally friendly pesticides. During wet periods, watch out for fungal diseases and use bio-conditioners as a preventive measure.

Lawn mowing and lawn care

Regular mowing with sharp blades is not only aesthetically pleasing, it's also healthier: it thins weeds and strengthens the lawn.

Practical tips for June garden care

  • Soak the roots before planting and water thoroughly after planting.

  • Place stakes or support systems next to tall plants.

  • In strong sun, shade the young plants or place them in partial shade.

  • Mulching helps to maintain soil moisture and reduce weeds.

  • We check the plants daily for signs of pests and diseases.
