Mowing tips for the summer season:
When and how to mow the lawn?
Lawn care tips
During the summer months, lawn care needs special attention. By using the right mowing techniques, you can keep your lawn healthy, beautiful and resistant to the stresses of heat and drought. Below is a summary of the most important summer lawn mowing and lawn care tips to keep your garden lush and green all season long.
When to mow the lawn in summer?
Ideal times to mow your lawn
In summer, mowing should be done in the early morning or late afternoon or evening, when temperatures are lower and evaporation is less.
Avoid midday and hot sun, when grass is more stressed, dries out faster and becomes more vulnerable.
Cloudy, dry weather is best
Before mowing, wait until the dew has dried up but the grass is not yet hot.
Mowing wet grass is not recommended, as the mower can become clogged, the cut will be uneven and the risk of disease is increased.
How often do we mow the lawn?
Mowing is generally recommended once a week to keep the lawn thick and healthy.
During wet, fast-growing periods, trimming may be necessary up to twice a week.
Mowing once a week or less frequently during hot, dry periods is sufficient to avoid excessive stress on the lawn.
How high do we mow our grass in summer?
In summer, it is advisable to leave the grass longer, 5-7 cm high, to keep the soil shadier, to reduce water evaporation and to allow the roots to grow deeper.
In hot, extremely dry conditions, up to 6-8 cm can be ideal.
Never cut more than a third of the grass at once, as this stresses the plant and weakens the lawn.
If the grass has grown too high (e.g. during a holiday), gradually reduce the height in several steps.
How to mow the lawn?
Change the cutting direction: Mow in a different direction each time to avoid one-sided bending of the grass and patchiness of the lawn.
Use of sharp blades: Always use sharp mowing blades, as dull blades will tear the grass, which can lead to disease.
Benefits of mulching mowers: Mulching is the process of returning the cut grasses to the soil by chopping them into small pieces, thus providing a natural nutrient supply, reducing evaporation and protecting the soil.
Removing obstacles: Remove any obstacles (branches, toys) before mowing to ensure a smooth cut.
Other summer lawn care tips
Irrigation
It is most effective to water in the early morning, when the lawn can absorb more water and evaporation is minimal.
Avoid too frequent, shallow watering; instead, water deeply 2-3 times a week to deepen the roots.
After rain, wait until the soil and grass have dried before mowing.
Soil loosening, lawn aeration
Compacted soil blocks water and nutrients, so it's a good idea to aerate or aerate the lawn from time to time.
Weeding
Remove weeds regularly so they don't take water and nutrients from the grass.
Nutrient replenishment
In early to mid-summer, add slow-release fertiliser or organic manure to the lawn, but avoid excessive nitrogen use.
What to look out for in extreme weather?
Heat: Leave the grass higher (6-8 cm) and avoid mowing at midday.
Drought: Mow less frequently to avoid excessive stress on the lawn.
After a rainy season: Only mow when the grass and soil are dry to avoid clogging the mower and damaging the lawn.
